The new Blu-ray libraries represent an alternative for long term archiving against tape and UDO. With a 50GB capacity moving to 200GB over the next 2 years, Blu-ray appears to be the new long term archive technology.

DISC GmbH, the drive independent library manufacturer, develops and manufactures optical mass storage systems with capacities over 30 TB in their headquarter in Bingen, Germany. Currently the library specialist is concentrating on DVD and Magneto Optical technologies. New technologies such as BlueLaser shall be implemented in the archive systems within 2004. The company, which emerged from NSM AG has been operating their worldwide business since 1993. From 2001 the provider of optical storage systems has been active in Germany under the name DISC. The products are distributed worlwide, main markets are Europe, Asia and USA. Up to now Disc has an installed base of over 20.000 units worldwide. In December 2003 the company separated from the American DISC Inc. under a Management-Buy-Out and is now DISC GmbH. The company headquarter in Bingen currently employs a workforce of 35.

Horst Schellong - Managing Director, DISC GmbH

Horst Schellong joined NSM in 1995 as Research and Development Manager, and now serves as Chief Technology Officer for DISC. Prior to joining DISC, Mr. Schellong spent over 20 years at IBM where he held many different positions in R&D in the magnetic disk- drive division. Under his guidance, Mr. Schellong was responsible for incorporating key features into the well-established NSM product line. Mr. Schellong holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
